As a key step on my road to Ironman Australia, I thought it was essential that I go out and run a marathon. Unfortunately based on my event schedule, the best option was the Orange Colour City marathon. It was scheduled a couple of weeks after my last pre-Ironman tri, Geelong 70.3, which was not ideal as I would still be recovering. It was also still quite early in my Ironman training block. Even still it had a lot going for it including the chance to explore Orange, another NSW town I have never visited, and provided an interesting course not just set to make up the distance.
My goal for the race was sub 3:30 but figured I would shoot for 3:15 at the start and see how I held up. Rightly or wongly I had opted for my “fast” shoes. A pair of minimalist Inov-8 shoes that I reserve for 5k runs and more recently the run leg at Geelong.
The race went well although it did get a bit lonely at times as I basically didnt see anyone from the point the half marathon turned around until just before the full marathon turning point. I even felt moderatly confident that 3:15 was on the cards.
The last 10k
And the the last 10k arrived. I had budgeted for 1 gel per 7k up to the 28k mark with a plan to push through the last 14k. Bad plan. At about 32k my legs started to feel extremely tired and my feet were sore. I could imagine the old tyre being dragged behind me.
I pushed on and only lost a couple of places (the only people to overtake me since the HM turn at 10k). I ultimately finished in an official time of 3:26:43. A great result.
Hopefully I can make it back to Orange for next years race too!
